PISMO CLAM DRESS

LOCAL EXOTIC

Let your favorite white summer dress have stripes! It's a guarantee you will be the only one at the party rocking the Pismo clams, and these RARE beauties - though they spend most of their lives under the sand - deserve to shine!  It's estimated that only 5% of the population ehxibit these RADIANT, redwood-colored stripes. Express your own potent free spirit, knowing these mollusks are totally UNTAMEABLE, as they require living on sandy beaches that are totally exposed to the full brunt of the open ocean. Embody the TENACIOUS essence of an animal that spends most of its life - up to half a century - holding on, anchoring itself in the constantly shifting sands... Meanwhile these clams are incredibly FERTILE, individuals producing both sperm and eggs - up to 75 million at a time!

HABITAT + LIFESTYLE

While the lucky shell that this pattern was made from was found on Moss Landing State Beach, this is just about as far north as this species is found. It's much more common in San Luis Obispo County, as its name suggests, and south down to Mexico. Furthermore, this clam belongs to a family of bivalves that is characteristic of tropical seas. The largest clam on the California coast, specimens have been found up to 8" in size! When eggs hatch, larvae spend a brief few weeks as zooplankton, before assuming their typical clam appearance, and anchoring their juvenile byssus into the sand.

STATUS

The Pismo clam is not considered to be threatened or endangered, though the population is in decline. Commercial fisheries off Morro and Pismo beaches are difficult to regulate. Furthermore, oil that leaks or is bilge-pumped in wastewater from tankers off the central coast of California has been observed to threaten this species.

CONSERVATION PARTNER: MISSION BLUE

SIZING + CARE

See link above. This dress fits quite loosely in the chest, and hangs just above the knee. It's made of a thin, soft, modern jersey. Discreet leather belt loops at the hips allow for the option of showing off the waist, if desired.
